I grew up poor, and judgmental of how I saw people I grew up poor, and judgmental of how I saw people with money act. I assumed that if I ever had money I too would become selfish, disconnected, or obsessed with status.

I spent yearsss in working class jobs, counting every expense, stressing over emergencies, and wondering if I'd ever feel stable.

Eventually, I got into a career that pays well.

And you know what changed? Not my values - my problems and opportunities.

I stopped wondering how I'd cover the basics. I stopped feeling a pit in my stomach every time something broke. I stopped experiencing any unexpected expense like a crisis.

Instead, I had room to help friends. To catch up on my backlog of needs. To support family. To be generous. To say yes more often, to myself and others.

Money didn't make me care less about people. It made it easier to offer care for them. Being a greedy person is a choice people make, not an outcome of having money.

The simple hack I love to tell my clients about is The simple hack I love to tell my clients about is mental accounting:

Thinking of money from different sources as having different purposes,

And putting money in different places when you want it to do things in different parts of your life.

It might be a way you already think about money without even realizing it! ... The hack is getting intentional with it:

Money transferred into this account is for problems,
Money kept in another account is for bills,
Money in a third place is for fun discretionary spending

Instead of intense budgeting, would you try mental accounting?
Your values are about community. Your bank account Your values are about community. Your bank account was designed for individualism. No wonder things feel weird.

If you've ever wondered how people actually share money with partners, chosen family, collectives, housemates, or mutual aid networks without everything becoming a chaotic group text, this workshop is for you.

Join me on July 21 for How to Do Money Together: a practical, honest class and conversation about collective finance, shared expenses, mutual support, trust, boundaries, and building enough together.
