I hear people say this All The Time: "I just wanna I hear people say this All The Time: "I just wanna buy some land with my friends..." Well, you could...! If you: 1/ find a few trusted people and gather down payment money [does not have to be equal, often one person puts in the biggest share to start] 2/ make an agreement about how to pay for and do scouting, startup [solar? immediate renovations?], monthly expenses, and ongoing maintenance, whether via money or labor 3/ make an exit plan that accounts for folks payments and sweat equity - before anyone ever needs this 4/ bonus: create a joint checking account 5/ write this all down Meanwhile: • Get prequalified for a mortgage to see what price range you can buy - using a local broker is usually better than a bank! • Scout locations • Create criteria of things that are must have and nice to have on the land and nearby • Get a realtor to help you with options, zoning, programs... • Get preapproved for a mortgage (unless you're buying in cash) once you're otherwise close to ready I work with groups to make these agreements listed above. After going no contact with my evangelical family After going no contact with my evangelical family in my 20s, I made some unhelpful decisions and learned lots of things the hard way. Here's three things I did wrong (and what I did right, later): 1/ I took a soul sucking job because I needed money (then, I quit it once I had a tiny safety net) 2/ I spent a lot of time feeling ashamed and wishing I had a different family (but I also built beautiful chosen family and eventually let go of that shame) 3/ I felt alone in my struggle (and then I made connections with other people who'd done this and lived fantastically to tell the tale) Do you relate?
